Interporto Campano becomes an extension of maritime terminal
homepresspress releases Interporto Campano becomes an extension of maritime terminal
25/01/2010
Regione Campania, Naples Port Authority and Interporto Campano have signed a cooperation agreement for the set up of “NA.P.L.E.S.”, Naples Port Logistics Extended System enabling the full organizational and functional integration between the activities of the Port of Naples and Interporto Campano as terminal and intermodal operator.
The operational partnership “NA.P.L.E.S.” (Naples port logistics extended System) has been encouraged by Campania Region, traditionally engaged in the support of logistics integration among regional hubs, in order to enhance the optimization of logistics activities in the integrated regional transport system.
On account of the development of container traffic during last years and in view of the realization of the new Container Terminal which will allow for a doubling of the current containers handling capacity of the Port of Naples, Naples Port Authority has decided to be part of the agreement in order to promote a full integration of terminal facilities of the Port of Naples and Interporto Campano.
Interporto Campano, already equipped with infrastructures and services fitted to the handling of International flows of containerized goods, represents in fact for the Port a sort of terminal. Within Interporto an 225.000 m2 intermodal terminal is operational, with 7 tracks, managed by T.I.N. (Terminal Intermodale Nola) and directly linked to “Nola Interporto” railway station, connected to national railway network.
Aiming to enhance the development of intermodal transport the new rail shuttle service has been launched, with daily connections to the Port of Naples and Interporto Campano. The new service will be managed by Interporto Servizi Cargo (I.S.C.), the new private freight transport rail company, owned by Interporto Campano covering the connections between Nola - Milan, Nola - Bologna - Verona and which has scheduled to launch 13 new national connections during the next three years.
The development of the combined "rail-road" transport is an essential element to enhance the handling of goods between the North and the South of the Country, thus giving a contribution to the economic growth of the Southern regions, especially the Campania area. With this aim, Interporto Campano, the main logistics platform in the South of Italy, has decided to centralize its railway cargo activity into a special company, Interporto Servizi Cargo, set up in February 2009.
